1 Pelvis and hip joint Flashcards
What is the real life position of the pelvic girdle?
ASIS in horizontal plane with pubic tubercles.
What are the three parts of the nominate bone?
Ilium.
Ischium.
Pubic.
How does the acetabulum contribute to the stability of the hip joint? (3).
Smooth lunate articular surface.
Acetabular notch bridged by transverse acetabular ligament.
Acetabular labrum deepens articular surface..
How does the fibrous capsule contribute to the stability of the hip joint?
Encircles rim of acetabulum and attaches to femoral head.
Spiral shape is taut in extension.
Describe the iliofemoral ligament:
Strongest.
Covers hip joint superiorly and anteriorly.
Prevents excessive extension.
Describe the pubofemoral ligament:
Convers hip joint inferiorly and anteriorly.
Prevents excessive abduction.
Describe the ischiofemoral ligament:
Covers hip joint posteriorly.
Weakest ligament.
What is an ‘open book’ fracture?
Pubic symphysis fracture.
Result of head on force.
What does posterior dislocation of the femur look like?
When does it occur?
Associated with?
Shortened and internal rotated.
Seated injury.
Sciatic nerve injury + acetabular fracture.
What does anterior dislocation of the femur look like?
When does it occur?
Ext rotated, abducted and flexed.
Occurs in extreme abduction and external rotation.
What is developmental dysplasia of the hip?
Loose ligaments result in dislocation.
Acetabulum + humeral head develop abnormally without each other- can’t be put back.
What may hip dislocation lead to?
Avascular necrosis of humeral head.
