4- epidemiology of respiratory disease Flashcards
what is a good score to use to measure burden of disease?
disability adjusted life years (DALY) = combine years of life lost prematurely + years of life lived with disability
is male or female more likely to have asthma?
in children boys have more prevalent but in adults women have more prevalent (get more severe form so more likely to be hospitalized than males)
what is prognosis like for lung cancer, why?
high mortality - very low 5 year survival because most of them diagnosed at very late stage
is their difference in smoking in well deprived and least deprived areas?
smoking rates very massively from deprived areas (more deprived have more smoking)
child in more deprived areas are more likely to grow up around smokers, have a mother that smoked in pregnancy so more likely to smoke themselves
is vaping still thought to help smoking cessation - what is problem with it?
- though to now not help smoking cessation (might even reduce smoking cessation)
- high prevalence among teenagers + young adults →addictive, easy to obtain
anecdotal evidence of wheeze, SOB, reduced oxygen stats
