- the type of work being done (occupational)
- the organization in which it is done (employing organization)
What are 3 aspects of workplace culture?
symbols - vocab/ceremonies/jokes
subcultures - expectations on behaviour
socialization process - rules/dress code/mission statement
What are the 2 types of socialization?
anticipatory socialization - happens before you become a professional; get information from family/friends/volunteer experiences/news etc
occupational socialization - happens once you have the job; training and introduction to new circumstances
what are the 2 stages of acquiring professional knowledge?
theoretical - training/school
informal/applied - practicum/residency
What are formal and informal aspects of a professional subculture?
formal: getting the degree; supervision and tactical
informal: informal strategies ex. disciplinary problem solving
What are the 3 phases/rites of passage to going from student to professional?
Separation - integrated into work culture
Transition - ambiguous stage; losing student identity
Incorporation - ceremony/ritual
What are changes that occur during student orientation?
different attitudes towards clients/patients (idealism vs cynacism)
depersonalization and detached concern a form of self protection
What are the 3 themes discussed in Crowe and colleagues study of medical students?
hierarchy - students must pay their dues and try to own respect
showing obedience - unquestioned compliance with their consultants; never bothering/challenging
concealing uncertainty - scared of being exposed that you are unknowledgeable; not the best practice for medical care
In Cech and colleagues study, why did women have a hard time staying in STEM?
Women didn’t have doubt int their abilities but couldn’t have career fit confidence - had a hard time finding confidence by fitting in; lack of confidence to excel due to sterotypes
What is the socratic method of learning?
asking a question, giving an answer, then following up with more questions to engage students in interactive learning. when done in classroom setting, can be scary and humiliating
