Developmental changes in friendship
Early childhood - maximize enjoyment via play. Middle childhood - avoid rejection and present oneself to others in a positive way, understand norms. Adolescence - explore, know, define oneself.
Three stages of expectations of friends
Early stage - common activities, play, nearby, similarity. Middle - acceptance, loyalty, values, attitudes. Empathic - genuineness, intimacy. After 12 years, children start to expect emotional support.
Cultural differences in friendship
In many countries, viewed as less important for children’s self-worth. In collectivist countries, friendships characterized by more emotional intimacy in individualistic countries
