Any other child that is from approximately the same age cohort
Peer interactions
Often consist of short interactions without long-term commitments. Many such interactions between peers. Often quite context specific. Do not require mutual liking, unlike friendship
Friendship
Regular and sustained peer interactions. Share expectations of future interactions. Reciprocal actions. Reciprocal liking/interest
Major milestone in social interactions
Walking - mobility
Peer interactions before 6 months
Building blocks - interested in peers, respond to peer cries, touches and looks and other infant.
Peer interactions 1-2 years
Play is based on objects. Hide & seek. Imitation
Peer interactions 2-3 years
Theory of mind, taking turns, sharing, wider range of games such as pretend play.
Teapot vs. block
Block allows for more imaginative play because it does not have a very specific function
Imaginary/pretend play
Better conflict resolution, emotional regulation, turn taking, social competence, understanding others, coordinating activities, etc.
Modeling behavior
Imitating parents and peers. Less skilled children benefit from the presence of older children whose behavior they can model
