Poverty impacts on child development
Low birth rate, longer time in hospital, more likely to die in childhood, emotional/behavioral problems, abuse, neglect, violent crime, drop out of school. Parental behavior affected by neighborhood, SES. Limited resources
Social policy
Planned actions to attain a social goal or solve problem - if by government, then called a public policy. Provide: information, funding, services, infrastructure.
Primary prevention policies
Alter environmental conditions and prevent problems before they actually develop. e.g. legislation to prevent lead paint.
Secondary prevention policies
Focus on improving quality of life for children that are already at risk.
Head start beneficial?
Questionable - may have modest positive effects. 3/4 years may be too late for some improvements. Also there may be a fade in improvements because kids usually go to school/live in neighborhoods that don’t support.
Head start program
Education, health, nutrition, mental health, social services, parental involvement
Early head start effects
Improvements in socio-emotional behaviors found as late as 7 years after. Improved outcomes in language, emotional understanding, communication.
