3D The Gut Brain Axis Flashcards
What is the Gut?
The Gut refers to the long flexible tube from the mouth to anus that is the passageway involved in digestion.
What is the gut responsible for?
The gut is responsible for processing food, absorbing nutrients, and excreting waste.
What is the gut brain axis (GBA) ?
the gut brain axis is the bidirectional connection between the gut and the brain through the enteric and central NS
How does the gut and brain communicate?
The gut and brain communicate via vagus nerve and gut microbiota.
What is the vagus nerve?
The vagus nerve runs from the brain to gut and sends messages from gut to brain (fullness, hunger, discomfort) and brain to gut (salivation, secretion enzymes)
what is the enteric nervous system?
the network of nerves in the gut and is a subdivision of the autonomic NS
what is gut microbiota?
microorganisms that live in the gut (bacteria, fungi). a diverse gut microbiota results in better gut health.
what is gut microbriome?
all the genes of the microorganisms that live in the gut
what is gut dysbiosis?
unbalanced gut microbiome.
