what is stress?
psychological (mental) and physiological (bodily) experience where something of significance demands an individuals efforts to cope or attention.
what is a stressor?
stimulus (internal or external) that prompts a stress response
what are internal stressors?
stressors that come from within a persons body that prompts the stress response. can be cognitive or biological e.g illness
what are external stressors?
stimulus from outside a persons body and in our environment that prompts the stress response
what is eustress?
positive response to stress
what is distress?
negative response to stress
what is acute stress?
a form of stress that is brief in duration characterised by intense psychological and physiological symptoms
what is chronic stress?
form of stress that lasts several months or longer. cortisol is released to help the body maintain heightened arousal
what is FFF?
Fight flight freeze response is an involuntary and automatic response to stress
what is fight?
confronting the stressor, deals with danger through activation of the sympathetic nervous system
what is flight?
fleeing from the stressor, prompts release of adrenaline, activation of the sympathetic nervous system.
what is freeze?
immobility and shock response, body can’t respond instantly. activation of parasympathetic nervous system as well as sympathetic. bodily functions like blood pressure drop below normal
