3A - Typical and Atypical Behaviour Flashcards
Typical Behaviour
Typical behaviour represents behaviour in most of the population. It is appropriate and expected in a given situation and is consistent with how an individual usually behaves.
Atypical Behaviour
Atypical behaviour refers to behaviour that is not displayed by the majority of the population and differs markedly from what is expected from an individual.
Social Norms
Are widely held standards that govern what people should and should not do in different situations in relation to others.
Cultural Perspective
The distinctive beliefs, values, customs, knowledge, art and language that form the foundation of everyday behaviour and practices.
Statistical Rarity
Typical behaviour is considered to be found in the large majority of people whereas atypical behaviour is infrequent and may be considered a statistical extremity.
Personal Distress
If unpleasant and upsetting emotions that are persistent and disruptive to a person’s capacity to function adequately occur, it is considered atypical.
Adaptive Behaviour
Helps individuals adjust effectively to their environment, supporting positive and appropriate functioning (e.g., getting ready for school).
