1C - Population, Sample and Sampling Flashcards
Population
Refers to the group of people who are the focus of research from which a sample is drawn.
Sample
Refers to the subset (a part of a larger group) of the population that is selected for research purposes.
Sampling
Refers to the process of selection of a subset for investigation. It should be representative of the population.
Convenience Sampling
It is not random, but selects participants who are readily and easily available.
Random Sampling
Ensures that every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected to be part of the sample.
Stratified Sampling
It first divides the population into subgroups from which participants are randomly selected in the proportion they appear in the population.
Allocation
It is the process of assigning participants to experimental or control groups.
