What are the soft tissues of the mouth?
- pulp
- periodontal ligament
- oral mucosa
- gingiva (mucosa)
What are cell-matrix interactions?
Cells that attach to proteins from outside the cell
What is the extracellular matrix?
Forms the connective tissue to allow cells to attach between all the space between all the cells
What is lamina propria?
Specialised connective tissue that supports the oral epithelium
What does connective tissue contain?
Fibroblasts, extracellular matrix, growth factors, intracellular junctions
What does the basement membrane act as?
A barrier between outside and inside the body.
What is the basement membrane made of?
Secretions of epithelial cells and fibroblasts
What is the role of macrophages in soft tissue development?
Activates fibroblasts to lay down collagen
What is fibrosis?
The thickening and scarring of connective tissue
