-when a violation of human right occurs, conflict breaks out e.g. denial of basic human need of housing, education, unrepresentative government

-if there is conflict in an area, human rights are violated e.g. mortality, damage to infrastructure, fighting, genocide

Example of violation of human rights as a cause of conflict- violation of human rights in South Africa 1948-91 under apartheid

- denial of human rights- employment opportunities based on race
- discrimination and denial of freedom in an undemocratic society- blacks have no right to vote, not allowed to own land
- unrepresentative government in which people are treated unequality or unjustly and excluded from decision making- segregation of blacks and whites
