✅3.8 - Setting and marking out Flashcards
What is marking out?
The process of transferring measurements in the form of lines or shapes onto a material in advance of cutting, shaping, bending or forming
Why is accuracy in measurement important?
Otherwise it may reduce both the function and the aesthetic appeal
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a SHARP STRAIGHT LINE on TIMBER?
Sharp pencil / marking knife / sliding bevel
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a SHARP STRAIGHT LINE on PLASTIC?
Permanent marker pen
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a SHARP STRAIGHT LINE on METAL?
Straight steel edge and scriber (looks like a very sharp metal pencil)
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a PARALLEL LINE on TIMBER?
Marking gauge
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a PARALLEL LINE on PLASTIC & METAL?
Odd-leg calipers (looks like a compass for math with a bent leg)
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a 90 DEGREE ANGLE on TIMBER & PLASTIC?
Try square
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a 90 DEGREE ANGLE on METAL?
Engineer’s square
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a 45 DEGREE ANGLE on TIMBER & PLASTIC & METAL?
Mitre square / combination square
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a CENTRE OF A HOLE on TIMBER?
Sharp pencil and a centre punch (screw looking things)
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a CENTRE OF A HOLE on PLASTIC?
Permanent marker
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a CENTRE OF A HOLE on METALS?
Dot / centre punch
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a CENTRE OF A ROUND PIECE OF MATERIAL on TIMBER & PLASTIC & METALS?
Centre square
What equipment should you use if you want to mark ARCHES, CURVES, AND CIRCLES on TIMBER?
A pair of compasses
What equipment should you use if you want to mark ARCHES, CURVES, AND CIRCLES on PLASTICS & METALS?
Dividers (looks like a compass)
What equipment should you use if you want to mark an IRREGULAR SHAPE on TIMBER & PLASTIC & METALS?
Template (?)
What equipment should you use if you want to mark a MORTISE AND TENON JOINT on TIMBER?
Mortise gauge for both mortise and tenon
Precision instruments for measurements (4)
- Inside and outside calipers
- Micrometre
- Vernier gauge
- Digital vernier caliper
Use of inside and outside calipers
- Measure the inside or outside of a material
- inside looks like a compass + chopsticks
- outside looks like a pear
Use of micrometre
- Measure depth, length, or thickness to a high density of accuracy
- looks like a horse shoe with a stick
- i think we used in physics before
Use of vernier gauge
- Measure internal and external distances with precision and accuracy
- i think we used one before like the ruler but you can slide the thing to fit the object that doesn’t make sense
Use of digital vernier caliper
- Measure internal and external distances
- Has an LCD display that can be set to either imperial or metric units
- a digital ver of vernier gauge
