What is social hierarchy?
A rank order within the group of animals consisting of dominant and subordinate members.
Dominate individuals carry out ritualistic (threat) displays whilst subordinate animals carry out appeasement behaviour to reduce conflict.
What do social hierarchies increase the chance of?
The dominates favourable genes being passed on.
Why do animals form alliances?
To increase social status in a group.
Why do subordinate and dominat animals benefit from co-operative hunting?
Because they gain more energy than lose compared to forgating alone as more energy is used per individual
What does co-operative hunting do
ensure that larger prey is caught with more success
What is social defenses
increase the chances of survival as some individuals can watch for predators while others forage.
Define altruistic behaviour (similar to parasitic)
harms the donor individual but benefits the recipient

where the roles of the donor and recipient reverse

when some insects contribute reproductively while other raise relatives
