1.2: Replication of DNA Flashcards
What does DNA polymerase need to replicate?
Primers
What is a primer?
A short strand of nucleotides which binds to the 3’ end of the template DNA strand
What does a primer allow the template DNA strand to do?
Allow the polymerase to add DNA nucleotides
What does DNA polymerase do?
it adds to DNA nucleotide using complementary base pairing to the deoxyribose end of the new DNA that is forming
What are the stages of DNA replication?
DNA is unwound and H bonding between bases is broken
primer needed to start replication which binds to 3’ end of strand
DNA poly adds DNA nucleo using complementary base pairing to 3’ end of me DNA forming
DNA poly can only add DNA nucleo in one direction resulting in leading strand being rep continuously and lagging to replicate in fragments
Fragments are joined by ligase
