3.5 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Where did photosynthesis first evolve?
Prokaryotic cells
What is responsible for the oxygenated atmosphere?
prokaryotic cyanobacterial photosynthesis
Chlorophyll function
Absorb light energy to boost electrons in photosystems I and II.
What are photosystems I and II?
Captures light in the internal membranes of the chloroplasts.
- transfers high energy electrons through ETC.
What is established as electrons are transferred?
The electrochemical gradient of protons across the internal membrane
Why is the proton gradient important?
It synthesizes ATP from ADP.
Light independent reactions
- Calvin Cycle
Occurs in the stroma
Light-dependent reactions
Photosynthesis
Occurs in the thylakoids
- Light and water needed
- Releases oxygen
Light dependent reactions produce
NADPH & ATP to the Calvin cycle
The Calvin Cycle produces
ADP + PI and NADP+ to the light dependent reaction
- releases glucose
- requires CO2
Major processes of photosynthesis:
- Excited electrons leave chlorophyll and reduce NADP+ to NADPH
- Move through ETC & provide energy to pump H+ into inner thylakoid
H+ converts ADP to ATP
Photosystem II
Hydrolyzes water and releases oxygen and H+
