2.6-2.7 - Membrane Transport & Facilitated Diffusion Flashcards
Passive transport
Does not require energy
- Moves with a concentration gradient, high to low.
Facilitated diffusion
Integral/transport proteins move large & polar molecules through the cell membrane.
- Type of passive transport.
Active transport
Requires ATP to force molecules against concentration gradient.
- ATP energizes transport proteins.
Endocytosis
When a cell takes in material by forming new vacuoles from the plasma membrane.
- Phagocytosis, receptor-mediated, pinocytosis.
Phagocytosis
Cell stretches around substance to ingest it.
Receptor-mediated endocytosis
Substances must bind to receptors to get in.
Pinocytosis
Cell ingest liquids
Exocytosis
- Internal vesicles fuse with plasma membrane & secrete waste.
Used to get rid of cell waste and allow valuable material to exit.
How do large quantities of water pass through the cell membrane?
Aquaporins
Which molecules require channel proteins to pass through the membrane?
Charged ions.
Membranes may become polarized by movement of ions across membranes
