(3.5) Ownership And Control - Postmodernism Flashcards
Postmodernist view of the media
-argue that significant changes in the nature of society and move from modernity to post modernity has changed the whole nature of ownership and control
-now seen as impossible to argue owners or editors control the media
Define media saturation
-similar idea to pluralists
-refers to the choice being greater than ever to what media we are exposed to and we are exposed to media messages all day every day
Baudrillard - simulacra and image domination
-we live in a media saturated world where images dominate and distort our view
AO2 - we see sanities images of war - hyper reality(inability to distinguish from reality and a simulation)
-media presents simulacra - make believe images or reductions of real events that have no relationships with the real world
Levene - media fluidity
-media is fluid and the gap between producers and their audiences has worn away - now much easier to reject hegemony and find an outlet
-facebook and twitter allow people to put across their own narratives and views (counter - hegemony)
AO3 - criticisms of postmodernism
-Levene is too optimistic - audience may not be able to control their narrative in a way that brings change
-some social media messages just exists in a social media bubble e.g singing a TikTok song
-media saturation actually gives power to the owners as if people don’t know what reality or hyper reality is then they can make up what they like
