3.5 - Marshall Island Human Wellbeing Threats Flashcards
What is a large part of the economy?
Fishing and agriculture (22%)
Why is there w dime?
Covers wire of US nuclear testing where there is still radioactivity
Area of land
70 sq miles
Height above SL
Barely 1m above
SLR prediction and consequences
66cm by 2100 will inundate three quarters of land
Effect on aquifers
Permeable soil so seawater intrusion, makes it salty and unusable for drinking, agriculture
SLR effect on nuclear site?
Permeable soil so tides get in then roll out contaminated with radioactivity, killing marine life
Further consequences of marine life
Means less fish for fishing, reduces yield and income when GDP per capita is already only just over $3000
CC will cause what weather change
More droughts so crops die, reducing yield and increasing prices
Why may diseases be caused?
Floods, typhoons damage sewage so it combines with water causing fever and dysentery outbreaks
How are coral reefs affected by climate change?
Higher temperature means coral bleaching
Ocean acidification lowers pH reducing growth
Consequences of coral reefs being destroyed?
Less habitat for food, crustaceans so less can be fished
Less wave energy reduced and more erosion
