3.4 Raliegh And Virginia Flashcards
What did england do to challenge spanish imperial dominance?
Set up a colony in north America
What was England’s situation in north america in the 1580s?
England claimed some territory in north america , but hadnt managed to establish a successful colony yet. During the journey around the world , drake had claimed new albion ( in California )for England. Also claimed newfoundland in eastern canada .
When was the first attempt and colonisation and what was the outcome?
In 1583 sir Humphrey Gilbert set out to establish a colony in Newfoundland , but the expedition failed
What did elizabeth do after Gilberts failure ?
Gave water Raleigh permission to explore and colonise unclaimed territories. She wanted Raleigh to establish a colony on the Atlantic coast of north america
What did Raleigh do in 1584?
Sent a fact finding mission to north america, the fleet landed on Roanoke island ,explorer the area and returned to england with two native Americans, who gave a glowing report of the region , and encouraged Raleigh to organise a secondary expedition
What did Raleigh do in 1585?
Sent five ships to virginia , led by richard grenville . 108 settlers tried to establish a permanent colony on Roanoke, while grenville went back to england for supplies.
What happened when francis drake visited in 1586 and what was their situation?
Running low on supplies , most of the planters (settlers) decided to return with drake , although a small group remained.
What was discovered on the 3rd expedition in 1587?
Founded deserted , it was thought the men were killed by the locals. Around 100 planters settled on the island and began to build a colony . They were expecting supplies from england in 1588 but the fleet was delayed by the spanish armada.
What happened when the supply ships finally reached roanoke in 1590?
All the planters had disappeared, they were never found and Roanoke became known as the lost colony
How bad timing effected the failure of the Roanoke colony?
If Supply ships were not delayed by the armada , the roankoke colony might have survived
How was lack of supplies a reason for the failure of the roankoke colony
Planters didn’t get enough supplies with them and found it difficult to grow food on roanoke. This made them more vulnerable to problems like the delay of supplies in 1588
How poor planning was a reason for the failure of the roankoke colony?
Establishing a colony thousands of mile from england was a major challenge , which required detailed planning and organisation. However initial exploration of Roanoke was inadequate and the whole project was poorly organised. This was largely because Raleigh funds were too limited .
