Elizabethan attitudes to education?
- increasingly valuable
- rejected social hierarchy of the country, education was about social mobility
- education was about preparing for life you were going to lead
What education did poor boys and girls get?
- No formal education.
- taught children at home to behave correctly and a basic religious education. From age six all kids had to go to Sunday school, learnt lords prayer , 10 commandments and the creed.
- boys were trained in simple work skills and girls helped mothers with household activities
What education did middle class children get from ages 4-8?
- They went to petty schools (aged 4-8) to learn reading , writing and arithmetic
- small local schools were run by parish priests
- strong religious focus
- didn’t have books , they had hornbook which was a wooden board with the alphabet and lords prayer.
- majority boys , some girls
What schools did girls go to aged 4-8?
Dame school, focused on the home , got a basic education.
What education did upper class children get?
Private tutor until early teens, noble household until mid teens , then university
What school did middle class children go too aged 8-14?
- grammar schools
- taught latin, greek, french, history , philosophy, archery , wrestling and running
- most pupils were boys from upper and middle classes , some were poor boys who were very bright , but most couldn’t as were needed at home .

What happened to the amount of universities during elizabeths reign?
They increased as the prosperity grew rapidly for the upper and middle class.
What could students learn at universities?
Music, latin, geometry, philosophy , greek, astronomy , law , theology, medicine , arithmetic
Why did education become more important in the elizabethan era?
- humans movement, education important in it own right
- protestants wanted people to be able to read the bible
- increase in business and trade needed more educated people im towns

Large group of people that surrounded elizabeth at all times

What were elizabeths favourite sports ?
- she and her courtiers often hunted deer, as entertainment and to actually eat
- the queen trained falcons(hawking ), it was an expensive process which only the rich could afford.
