a collection of abiotic and biotic factors
Canopy
a dense leafy covering formed by tall trees
Understory
another leafy covering formed by and smaller trees beneath
Humus
a material formed from decaying leaves and other organic matter
Taiga
dense forests of evergreens in the northern edge of temperate zones, also called boreal forests
Permafrost
layer of permanently frozen subsoil found in tundra
Photic Zone
sunlit region near surface of water where photosynthesis can’t occur
Aphotic Zone
dark region of water where photosynthesis doesn’t occur
Plankton
made of two groups:
floating algae-phytoplankton
free swimming animals-zooplankton
Wetland
ecosystem where water covers the soil or is present at or near the surface for at least part of the year
Estuary
a wetland formed where rivers meet the sea
