observation
the act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way.
inference
a logical interpretation based on what scientists already know.
hypothesis
a tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation
controlled experiment
an experiment in which only one variable is changed and all others are unchanged, or controlled
independent variable
the variable in an experiment which is deliberately changed
dependent variable
the variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable
control group
the group in an experiment which is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except from the for changes in the independent variable
data
the thing scientists observe in experiments which comes in two types. Quantitative data are numbers obtained by counting or measuring while qualitative data are descriptive and usually involve characteristics that can not usually be measured.
