3.3 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water
with light and chlorophyll
makes glucose + oxygen
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which green plants make their own food (sugar) using energy from the sun
What are the two stages of photosynthesis?
Light reactions
Carbon fixation
What are the light reactions?
Occurs in the chloroplasts
Water splits into hydrogen (goes to the next stage) and oxygen (diffuses out of the leaf), and chemical energy in the form of ATP (goes to the next stage)
The light energy from the sun is trapped by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts, and is turned into chemical energy (ATP)
What is carbon fixation?
Occurs in the chloroplast
Carbon dioxide turns into sugar when combined with hydrogen and the energy from ATP
A series of enzyme controlled reactions
In what 3 ways is the glucose used?
- Be used in respiratoin
- Converted into starch for storage
- Converted into cellulose for structure
What are the 3 limiting factors for photosynthesis?
Light intensity
Temperature
Carbon dioxide concentration
