3.1 Ecosystems Flashcards
Population
The total number of one type of organism (species) living in a habitat
Community
All the organisms in a particular ecosystem
Biome
A region of our planet with similar climate, flaura, and fauna
Carnivore
An organism that only eats other animals
Niche
The unique role an organism fills within its ecosystem
Ecosystem
The community in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which they interact
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Biodiversity
The variety of living organisms across the globe
Species
A group of organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
Producer
Plants (usually) that photosynthesise to produce food
Consumer
Organisms that obtain their energy by eating other organisms
Anything that isn’t a producer is a consumer
Herbivore
An organism that only eats plants
Omnivore
An organism that eats both plants and animals
Prey
Animals that are eaten by predators
Predator
Animals that hunt and kill other animals
Food chain
A diagram showing the simple feeding relationship between organisms
Food web
A diagram showing the interconnections of food chains
What is interspecific competition?
Competition between different species when they both require similar resources
What is intraspecific competition?
Competition between individuals of the same species over the same resources (more intense than interspecific competition)
When does competition occur?
When resources are in short supply
What are limiting factors for animals?
Food
Space
Mates
What are limiting factors for animals?
Light
Nutrients
Water
