What is fertilisation?
The fusion of the nuclei of the two haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote which divides to form an embryo
What are the two types of reproduction?
Asexual and sexual
What is asexual reproduction?
Multiplication, reproduction without fertilisation (all bacteria and some plants)
What is sexual reproduction?
- Most multicellular organisms reproduce this way
- Involves 2 parents
- Requires fertilisation
What are gametes?
Sex cells: in animals the egg and the sperm
What is a zygote?
A fertilised egg cell
What is the function of the ovary?
To produce eggs
What is the function of the oviduct?
Where fertilisation occurs
What is the function of the uterus?
Where the baby develops
What is the function of the vagina?
Receives the penis and speak during sexual intercourse
What is the function of the testes?
To produce sperm
What is the function of the penis?
Stiffens and is inserted into the vagina where it deposits sperm
What is the function of the sperm duct?
Carries sperm from the testes to the urethra
What is the function of the urethra?
Carries urine from the bladder to outside the body
