3.3 Percentage Yield Flashcards
Why is not possible to always produce the maximum theoretical yield of a reaction?
- Reaction may not go to completion because it is reversible
- Some of the product may be lost when separated from reaction mixture
- Some of the reactants may react in ways different to expected reaction
What is yield?
Amount of product obtained
How do you calculate the maximum theoretical mass for the reaction?
Firstly you need to calculate the number of mols required
Mols= Mass / molar mass
Then balance the equation
Then calculate the maximum theoretical mass using
Mass= Mols x Molar mass
What is the equation for percentage yield?
Amount of product / Maximum amount of product possible x 100
What is atom economy?
Formula mass of our useful products (desired products) / Formula mass of all reactants x 100
Why do we use atom economy?
Important for :
- Sustainable development
- Economic reasons, to use reactions with higher atom economy
