2.4 Nanoparticles Flashcards
1
Q
What are nanoparticles?
A
1-100 nanometres across
Contain a few hundred atoms
Very high surface area to volume ratio
Involve fullerenes
2
Q
Why do nanoparticles have different properties to their bulk chemicals?
A
Extremely high surface area to volume ratio
3
Q
What are nanoparticles used for?
A
Catalysts
Highly selective sensors
Stronger, lighter building materials
Lubricants
Small electrical circuits (as they conduct electricity)
4
Q
What are the disadvantages of nanoparticles?
A
Because they are so small they may be able to enter the brain from the blood stream causing harm
