3.3 Biological Clocks Flashcards
Revise basic concepts related to biological clocks
Zeitgeber
External cue influencing biological clock
Circadian rhythm
Cyclic repeating activity processes that continues under constant environmental conditions (free running period 24 hours approx)
Circannual
Repeats approx yearly
Circatidal
Cycle approx in sync with tides (12.4 hours)
Circalunar
Cycles in sync with moon phases (29 days)
Diurnal
Active during day
Nocturnal
Active during night
Crepuscular
Active at dawn and dusk
What are ganglion?
Specialized photosensitive cells in retina
Which organ is the SCN located in?
Brain (hypothalamus)
3 core steps of entrainment:
- Ganglion in retina process illumination levels, send info to SCN
- SCN interprets info, send to pineal gland
- Pineal gland secretes melatonin at a rate which is inversely proportional to light intensity
What is nyctinasty?
Night movements of plants
What are phytochromes and what do they do?
Cells that detect light change.
They respond to red light (day) and far red light (night) and establish circadian cycles.
What is the photoperiod?
The amount of daylight
What is the noctoperiod?
A period of uninterrupted darkness (critical night length).
