Key behavioural principles
Plays a role in helping to establish healthy diets in children + nutritious meal patterns within the home.
Modelling
The behaviours where parents and/or carers demonstrate nutritious eating habits. Can be intentional or unintentional.
- Makes it more likely to be passed on to children.
Exposure
The action of continually introducing foods + experiences around healthy + nutritious food for children.
- ‘Eat the rainbow’ is often used to increase food exposure.
Repetition
Being offered the same healthy foods a number of times, creating a familiarity with nutritious foods.
- Will often help establish a wide variety of foods in the diet.
Variables that can impact on children’s eating behaviours
- Food intake (acceptance + consumption of liked or disliked foods).
- Food choice
- Food preference
- Willingness to try + taste foods.
- Dislike + food refusals.
