3.2.3 - social + emotional role of food Flashcards
Social role of food
Food connects us socially (eg. getting together for a meal, sharing a picnic, meeting for a coffee and catch-up, etc).
Individual identity
Food expresses identity through the choices we make, the foods we celebrate with, the importance of what we consume, etc.
Connectedness
Food is often what brings people together (eg. spending time in the kitchen producing foods to be shared with the family, foods becoming family favourites, something like taco tuesday or sunday roast bringing the family together each week).
Peer groups
Peer groups often socialise around food.
Communities
Food brings peoples together through developing food communities and provides the opportunity for people to share their culture.
Emotional role of food
Helps to make connections to feelings and the occasions we are celebrating (eg. birthday cakes associated with happiness, chocolate associated with sadness).
Nutritional rationale
Uses the best available scientific evidence to provide information on the types + amounts of foods, food groups, + dietary patterns that aim to:
- Promote H+WB
- Reduced risk of diet-related conditions (CVD, T2D, obesity, etc).
- Reduce risk of chronic disease.
