Influence of social factors
Social factors influence the food we eat through having a clear relationship between food access, food choices, healthy eating, + individual food behaviour.
- Education
- Income
- Location
- Accommodation
- Available time
Education
How we gain knowledge + skills about food.
- Knowledge about seasonal produce, how to read labels, relationship between diet + disease, meal planning, recommended daily intake, ability to select + prepare in a safe + hygienic manner, etc.
Income
The amount of money available to purchase food.
- Higher income/SES = significant variation in types + amounts of foods they can purchase.
- Organic can be more expensive, healthy + fresh is cheaper than processed, cost of buying ingredients in quantity, greater disposable income = more eating out, etc.
Location
Where you live.
- Major cities = increased food accessibility options + greater access to variety (different cultures + cuisines).
- OMC = fewer range of places to purchase, fewer options on shelf, fewer options to purchase food made elsewhere.
- Less variety in rural areas, basic nutritious food has higher cost rurally, transportation opportunities to access food, etc.
Accommodation
The type of place you live determines your ability to cook.
- Availability of resources to store + prepare foods, available appropriate equipments + appliances, need fixed address for food delivery, overcrowding can make food prep difficult, hygiene, etc.
Available time
Time pressure.
- Time poor = turn to meal prepping + planning, processed foods, convenience foods + fast foods.
- May not have time to source healthy options, easy to prepare meals, convenience options, time needed to plan + shop healthy meals cooked at home.
