3.2.5 - food systems + behaviours Flashcards
Food systems
The may components + activities involving the primary production, processing + packing, distribution + access, media + marketing, consumption,
+ waste management of food. All of which affect food accessibility in different ways + subsequently people’s health.
Personal + social food behaviours
- Takeaway meals have ‘value added’ upside option (portion distortion).
- Rise in home takeaway + delivery services.
- Increase use of meal box delivery services.
- Rise in variety of food available 24/7 (eating is more convenient).
- Increase range of available products to reduce prep time.
- Increase in consumption of highly processed convenience foods (+ high in trans + sat fat, sugar, salt, etc).
Sedentary behaviour
- Physical inactivity/minimal body movement.
- Result in lack of energy expenditure (weight gain + therefore increase risk of some diet-related diseases).
- Increase obesity.
Overconsumption
- Food intake + energy requirements exceeding what is required by the body for functioning + energy expenditure.
- High rates of overweight + obesity.
- Overconsumption habits + behaviours are becoming normalised.
- Habits are causing mindless eating (eating without full awareness or conscious thought of the process).
Food sovereignty
The right of all peoples to healthy + culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound + sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food + agricultural systems.
Primary production
Refers to food production where crops are grown + harvested, and animals are raised.
Processing + packing
Involves changing the state of the foods produced during primary production into other products + packing them appropriately.
Distribution + access
Involves the transportation, storage, + sales of food (distribution) as well as how + where we get our food from (access).
Media + marketing
Occurs when someone promotes the sale of food products or food services. A range of media is used.
Consumption
Refers to the act of eating food.
Waste management
Involves reducing the amount of wastage produced during production, processing, distribution, + consumption.
