3.2 Osmosis Flashcards
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a region of high water potential to a region of low water potential through a partially permeable membrane
Solute + Solvent = ?
Solution
What is concentration?
The amount of dissolved solute in a given volume of solvent
What are the 3 types of solutions?
Hypertonic, Isotonic, and Hypotonic
Describe a Hypertonic solution
It is concentrated, resulting in a low water potential, so water comes in the solution via osmosis. In a plant cell, this causes the cell to be plasmolyzed, and the cell membrane detaches from the cell
Describe an Isotonic solution
There is no gain or loss of water as the solution has the same amount of water potential as its surroundings
Describe a Hypotonic solution
It is dilute, resulting in a high water potential, so water goes out of the solution via osmosis. In a plant cell, this causes the cell to be turgid, and slightly expands
