13.5b Flowers (Pollination & Fertilisation) Flashcards
What are the 5 steps of reproduction in a flower?
- Pollination
- Fertilisation
- Seed & Fruit Development
- Dispersal
- Seed Germination
Describe the process of pollination
The transfer of pollen from the Anther to the Stigma
What are the 2 types of pollination?
Cross-pollination & self-pollination
What is the difference between cross-pollination & self-pollination?
Self-pollination is when the pollen from an anther of one flower is transferred to the stigma of the same plant. Cross-pollination is when the pollen from the Anther of one flower is transferred to the stigma of another flower of the same species
What are the 2 types of flowers?
Insect-pollinated and Wind-pollinated
Give 3 features of an insect-pollinated flower
Possible answers:
- Brightly colored petals
- Usually produces nectar and scent
- Stamen and stigma are inside the ring of
petals
- Anther not articulated
- Fewer pollen grains
- Pollen grains are large and spiky
- Stigma is short and inside the flower
Give 3 features of a wind-pollinated flower
Possible answers:
- Small dull petals
- No nectar or scent
- Stamen and stigma hang out ring of
petals
- Anther is articulated
- Large number of pollen grains
- Pollen grains are small, smooth and
aerodynamic
- Stigma is feathery and branched
Describe the process of fertilisation
The pollen grain uses sugar found on the stigma for energy to grow a pollen tube and digests its way down the style and to an ovule in the ovary. the male and female nucleus fuse together, forming a zygote
What happens after fertilisation?
The ovule develops into a seed, and the ovary develops into a fruit
