15.1 Food Webs Flashcards
What is a food chain?
Shows the flow of energy form a producer to consumers
What is a food web?
Shows the connections between food chains
What do both food chains and food webs always start with?
Light energy from the sun
How is light energy converted into food energy?
Photosynthesis
What do arrows show in food chains and food webs?
The flow of energy
What is a producer?
An organism that is able to produce its own food energy
What is a consumer?
An organism that gains energy by eating other organisms
What is a primary consumer?
Herbivores, they eat producers for energy so are first to eat in a food chain
What is a secondary consumer?
Carnivores, they eat herbivores so are second to eat in a food chain.
What is a herbivore?
An organism that eats plants for energy.
What is a carnivore?
An organism that eats animals or meat for energy
What is an omnivore?
An organism that eats animals and plants for energy
What is a trophic level?
A position of an organism in a food chain
What is the energy in a food chain used for?
Growth and new tissue
How much of the energy is available to the next trophic level (how much of the energy is passed on to the next part of the food chain)?
10%
