Q

What are some natural inputs which may influence a crop?

A

Some natural inputs are:
- Temperature: crops require a minimum temperature for growing and it encourages photosynthesis.

  • Precipitation: precipitation in the form of rain needs to be high enough to encourage plants to grow.
  • Altitude: how high the land is, affects the temperature and the type of precipitation ( precipitation increases with height)
  • Relief and soil: the shape of the land can influence what type of farming can occur on it. A steep slope has thin soils which causes increased surface run off. While gradual slopes have deeper soils.

Q

What are some human inputs which may influence a crop?

A

human inputs for a crop are:
- Capital (money) and technology: the lack of capital may mean that countries are unable to take advantage of developments such as new strains of breeds and improved machinery and irrigation.

  • governments: can impose quotas on certain crops and subsidies to farmers that grow others (to encourage the growth of sed crop or to help the farmers actually turn a profit)

Transport and markets: transport is an expensive part of farming. Perishable commodities require an efficient transport network.
