What happens in the primary sector?
The primary sector is the extraction of raw materials from land and sea. These include fishing, mining etc
What happens in the secondary sector?
The secondary sector is manufacturing. Raw materials from the primary sector are used which change them into something different and which have more value.
What happens in the tertiary sector?
The tertiary sector is providing services to individuals such as in education (teacher), health (doctor) and transport ( bus driver) .
What happens in the quaternary sector?
The quaternary sector is the newest type of sector and it is based around modern and hi-tech manufacturing ( e.g. pharmaceuticals etc)
What model describes the proportion of people employed in each sector and how it changes over time?
The Clark-Fischer model shows how each sector changes. This happens as it shows the industries which the majority of the population worked in and how this changed over time. For example in 1800 ad , 10 % of people were in the Tertiary sector while today that is around 55% in this graph.
What is mechanisation?
Mechanisation is the process of using machines in a process. An example of this is the combine harvester which helps farming.

Some possible reasons for changing employment structures overtime include:
- mechanisation: which is the process of using machines in a process. This can lead many to change employment.
- Industrialisation: is the development of industries in a region. Individuals are needed to work in these industries.
- imports: competition from abroad may make certain imports more affordable ( such as coal) This may cause the decrease of the primary sector because of it.
