3.17 Trophic Levels Flashcards
What are trophic levels?
The different levels of a food chain
What is trophic level 1?
Producer
What is trophic level 2?
Primary consumer
What is trophic level 3?
Secondary consumer
What is trophic level 4?
Tertiary consumer
What is the general rule about the amount of energy that is passed on to each trophic level?
10% of energy is passed on to
What are the carnivores at the top of trophic levels called?
Apex predators
What are the three groups of organisms that don’t fit into trophic levels?
- Omnivores
- Detritivores
- Decomposers
What do detritivores and decomposers do?
They decompose the dead plant and animal matter in the environment. This allows them to recycle nutrients from animals and plants back into the ground, which can then be used again by producers.
What do the arrows in a food chain show?
The transfer of energy & biomass
Small animals like worms and woodlice that help to break down organic matter into smaller pieces are known as:
Detritivores
