How does bacteria reproduce and make us feel ill? (2)
- Although they can reproduce by themselves, bacteria often replicate rapidly inside our bodies because of the good food supply
- At the same time, they might produce toxins which make us feel ill by damaging our cells and tissues
What is an example of a bad bacteria in food which can infect us?
Salmonella - causes food poisioning
How do we catch salmonella?
By eating any food that has been contaminated with the bacteria. However, most commonly, by eating chicken that caught the disease when it was alive
How do we prevent against getting salmonella? (2)
- In the UK, most chickens have been vaccinated so they don’t catch the disease and pass it onto us.
- Cook and store your food at the appropriate temperature.
What are the 4 symptoms of salmonella?
- Fever
- Stomach cramps
- Vomitting
- Diarrhoea
How long does salmonella bacteria stay in the body?
- Passes by itself in about a week
How can you help the salmonella bacteria to pass?
By staying well hydrated

What are the symptoms of gonorrhea? (2)
- Pain when urinating
- Yellow or green discharge from vagina or penis
What are the prevention methods for gonorrhea? (2)
- Avoiding unsafe sex
- Barrier methods of contraception (condoms)
What is the treatment for gonorrhea?
- Common antibiotic, penicillin. However, now there are lots of different types of gonorrhea strains which have become resistant so we have to use rare and more expensive antibiotics
