3.1.4 Method 2: Anger Management Flashcards
why is prison necessary?
- It protects the public and offers criminals a second chance
- Reduces rate of recidivism- imprisonment is often paried with a treatment programme
what is Anger Management (AM)
- Attempts to change the way a person thinks
- Form of CBT
- Cognitive approach- behaviour is influenced by our internal mental processes and humans work like computers
- Aims to change the irrational thought process to become more rational
Novaco (2013)
- beleives prisons = ‘Efficient anger factories’
- Being imprisoned increased anger expression
Novaco (2013) reason for beleifs
- Overcrowded prisons
- Other prisoners tend to be violent
- Prisoners feel the need to act tough
Irrational thinking (IT) and example
IT patterns can often explain why they committed an aggressive crime
e.g Yochelson and Samenow -
Found 52 different thinking errors
Hostile Attribution Bias
A hostile attribution bias is when an individual explains somebody else’s behaviour in a negative manner, always thinking the worst
short term and long term aim of AM
Short term: reduce aggression in prisons
Long term: to rehabilitate offenders and reduce rates of recidivism
how does AM work?
Cognitive restructuring
> Gaining greater self- awareness and control over thought, making irrational, more rational
Regulation of arousal
> Learning how to control physiological state (relieving tension)
Behavioural strategies
> Learning problem-solving skills
what are Novaco’s 3 phases of therapy
- Conceptualisation (form a concept/idea of
something) - Skill acquisition (and rehearsal)
- Application (and follow through)
phase 1: conceptulisation
- Clients learn about adaptive and non adaptive
anger generally - Analyse own patterns of anger
phase 2: skill aquisition
- Clients are taught various skills (self - regulation,
cognitive flexibility and relaxation) - Taught better communication/social skills
> can resolve conflict
phase 3: application
- Clients apply the skills initially in controlled and
non - threatening situations - Receive extensive feedback from the therapist - - Clients later try in real life applications
