3.1.3 Small Intestine Flashcards
Where does the small intestine extend from/to?
Extends from the pylorus of the stomach to the ileocecal junction
What are the 3 parts of the small intestine?
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- Ileum
Which part of the small intestine receives the opening of the bile and pancreatic duct?
Duodenum - descending (via hepatopancreatic ampulla, then major duodenal papilla)
Where is the foregut/midgut boundary in the small intestine?
Between descending & inferior parts of the duodenum
How is the duodenum peritonised?
Retroperitoneal (partly)
How is the jejunum peritonised?
Intraperitoneal
How is the ileum peritonised?
Intraperitoneal
Which part of the small intestine is the shortest, widest and most fixed part?
Duodenum
What are the 4 parts of the Duodenum? (Proximal to Distal)
- The Superior Part of the Duodenum
- The Descending Part of the Duodenum
- The Inferior Part of the Duodenum
- The Ascending Part of the Duodenum
Where is the boundary between the jejunum and ileum?
There isn’t one, there is a gradual change
What is the characteristic colour of the a) Jejunum, b) Ileum
Jejunum = deeper red Ileum = paler pink
What is the characteristic wall of the a) Jejunum, b) Ileum
Jejunum = thick & heavy Ileum = thin & light
What is the characteristic vascularity of the a) Jejunum, b) Ileum
Jejunum = Greater Ileum = Less
What is the characteristic vasa recta of the a) Jejunum, b) Ileum
Jejunum = long Ileum = short
What are vasa recta?
straight arteries coming from the arterial arcades (loops/arches) in the mesentery
