2.5 Kidneys, Suprarenals & Ureters Flashcards
Where do the kidneys lie on the posterior abdominal wall?
level of the T12 - L3 vertebrae
Why does the right kidney lie slightly lower than the left kidney?
Due to the presence and position of the liver
What are the 3 structures which enter / leave the Kidney?
- The Renal Artery 2. The Renal Vein 3. The Ureter
What is the Anterior to Posterior arrangement of these Structures leaving the Hilum of the Kidney?
Anterior - The Renal Vein
Middle - The Renal Artery
Posterior - The Ureter
How are the kidneys peritonised?
Retroperitoneal
What type of gland is the suprarenal (adrenal) gland?
Endocrine - produces a variety of hormones including adrenaline and the steroids aldosterose & cortisol
Where is the suprarenal (adrenal) gland situated?
Directly superior to the kidney; over the medial aspect of the upper poles of each kidney
What are the ureters?
Muscular ducts carrying urine from the kidneys to the bladder?
What is the term used to describe the expanded upper part of the ureter?
Renal pelvis
What are the 3 areas of urea constriction during its course from the kidneys to the urinary bladder?
- At the junction of the ureters and renal pelvis (pelviureteric junction)
- At the pelvic brim, where the ureter crosses the external iliac artery
- At the vesicoureteric junction, where the ureter enters the bladder
How are the ureters peritonised?
Retroperitoneal (they have an abdominal course & a pelvic course)
What artery travels over the left renal vein?
Superior mesenteric
