3.1.2 brain functioning Flashcards
The frontal lobe
executive function (boss of the brain)
decision making & impulse control
has the motor cortex (controls voluntary movement)
temporal lobe
hearing and understanding sounds
understanding speech and creating speech
language, hearing , memory
occipital lobe
process visual information
main job is to control all things related to processing visual information
cerebellum
plays a vital role in movement, coordination, and balance. (motor skills)
takes information from the different senses, our spinal cord and other parts of the brain and combines them to coordinate behaviour.
parietal lobe
controls language but also specialises in touch and directing bodily movements
deals with reacting to the environment
has the somatosensory cortex (senses)
brainstem
maintaining breathing, circulation, digestion, swallowing.
sending & filtering information, (sensory info- coming in) (motor nerves- going out)
thalamus
sorts data, sends it where it needs to go
hypothalamus
maintains homeostasis and regulates hunger, thirst, sexual arousal and sleep.
regulates hormone production in the body.
pituitary gland
It’s the “master” gland because it tells other glands to release hormones
cerebrum
integration, making sense of all information coming in; contains neurons and synapses
corpus collosum
collection of nerves that connect the two sides of the brain together
basal ganglia
contains nuclei; motor control
cerebral cortex
is 80% of the brain
the limbic system
handles the memory but also raw appetites and desires- sleep, hunger, aggression and sex.
it is thought to be the source of all our basic emotions.
amygdala
the brain’s emotion centre, handles emotional responses to things.
