2.2.2 Independent and dependent variables Flashcards
hypothesis
a predicative statement that says the IV will affect the DV
independent variable
the variable that the researcher manipulates
Dependent variable
the variable that researcher measures
experimental/alternative hypothesis
the one that says there will be an effect of the IV on the DV
the null hypothesis
there is no effect of the IV on the DV except that which happens by chance
Hypotheses are always written in the same way
states that X will affect Y (the IV will affect the DV)
operationalising variables
means to fully explain them
one tailed (directional) hypothesis
predicts how something will affect something else
two-tailed (non-directional)
just states there will be an effect
