3.10 naming simple compounds Flashcards

1
Q

binary ionic compounds (type 1)

A
  1. cations are always named first
  2. cations take the name of the element
  3. anions take the root of the element (+) “ide” at the end.

Q

binary ionic compounds (type 2)

A

SOME METALS CAN FORM DIFFERENT CATIONS

  1. same rules as type 1
  2. add roman numeral after cation name to mark change
    ex.
    FeO==O2-» oxide, Fe2-» iron(2)== FeO» iron(2) oxide.
