3.10 naming simple compounds Flashcards
1
Q
binary ionic compounds (type 1)
A
- cations are always named first
- cations take the name of the element
- anions take the root of the element (+) “ide” at the end.
ex.
NaCl== Na+» sodium, Cl-»Chloride==NaCl» sodium chloride
2
Q
binary ionic compounds (type 2)
A
SOME METALS CAN FORM DIFFERENT CATIONS
- same rules as type 1
- add roman numeral after cation name to mark change
ex.
FeO==O2-» oxide, Fe2-» iron(2)== FeO» iron(2) oxide.
3
Q
what are poly atomic ions?
A
compound composed of covalent bonds that collectively have a charge and act as ions
4
Q
what are oxianions?
A
polyatomic ions that contain oxygen and have a negative charge
