2.1-2.2 Flashcards
what is electromagnetic radiation?
a way in which energy travels through space in a wavelike behavior, and travel at the speed of light in a vacuum.
what are the three characteristics of waves?
wavelength, frequency, and speed.
what is wavelength?
symbol is the greek letter lambda, and it’s the distance between two consecutive peaks in a wave.
what is frequency?
represented by the greek letter nu, and it’s the number of wave cycles per second that pass a given point in space.
what letter is the speed of light represented by?
the letter “c”.
who was max planck?
a physicist the studied radiation profiles of elements, and found that energy can be gained or lost only in whole-number multiples of the quantity “hv”. (“h” being planck’s constant).
what is planck’s constant?
the constant relating to the change in energy for a system to the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation absorbed or emitted; 6.626 x 10^-34 Js
what does quantsized mean?
the concept that energy can occur only in discrete units called quanta.
what is a quantum?
small “packets” of energy
what is a photon?
electromagnetic radiation that can be viewed as a stream of “particles”.
what is the photoelectric effect?
phenomenon in which electrons are emitted from the surface of a metal when light strikes it.
why is the electron bound to the nucleus of an atom considered to be a standing wave?
because the stationary and they do not move on the length of a wave “string”.
what is the dual nature of light?
the statement that light exhibits both wave and particulate properties.
what is diffraction?
the scattering of light from a regular array of points or lines, producing constructive and destructive interference.
