1.2 Flashcards
what is the scientific method?
the process of studying natural phenomena, involving observations, forming laws and theories, and testing of theories by experimentation.
what is a qualitative observation?
observations that do not involve numbers.
what is a quantitative observation?
a measurement of a number and unit that cannot be precisely reproduced.
what is the purpose of an experiment?
to test the hypothesis
what is a theory?
an interpretation of why nature behaves in a particular way.
what is natural law?
a statement that expresses generally observed behavior.
(ex. studies of innumerable chemical changes have shown that the total observed mass of the materials involved is the same before and after the change.
what is the law of conservation of mass?
mass is neither created or destroyed.
