2.10 Flashcards
who was dimitri mendeleev?
chemistry pioneer who developed the modern periodic table.
what is the aufbau principle?
as protons are added one by one to the nucleus to build up the elements, electrons are similarly added to these hydrogen like orbitals.
what is hund’s rule?
the lowest energy configuration for an atom is the one having the maximum number of unpaired electrons allowed by the pauli principle in a particular set of degenerate orbitals.
what are transition metals?
several series of elements in which inner orbitals (d or f) are being filled.
what is the lanthanide series?
a group of 14 elements following lanthanum in the periodic table, in which the 4f orbitals are being filled.
what are lanthanides?
the decrease in the atomic radii of the lanthanide series elements, going from left to right in the periodic table.
what is atomic radii?
half the distance between the nuclei in a molecule consisting of identical atoms.
what is the first ionization energy?
the transfer of a proton from one molecule to another of the same substance.
what are metalliods?
elements along the division line in the periodic table between metals and nonmetals. these elements exhibit both metallic and nonmetallic properties.
