3. Prokaryotes Part 3 Flashcards
What are mesophiles?
bacteria that favor milder temperatures similar to what humans and other organisms favor
What are thermophiles?
bacteria that can survive in temperatures up to 100C
What are psychrophiles?
bacteria that can survive at very low temperatures
What are autotrophs?
bacteria that utilize CO2 as their carbon source
What are heterotrophs?
bacteria that rely on organic nutrients created by other organisms
What are chemotrophs?
bacteria that get their energy from chemicals
What are phototrophs?
bacteria that get their energy from light
What are the four types of bacteria based on how they get their nutrients?
chemoautotrophs
chemohetertrophs
photoautotrophs
photoheterotrophs
What is a wild-type bacteria?
bacteria which possesses all the characteristics normal to that particular species
What is a lawn in relation to growth media?
dense growth of bacteria seen in petri dishes
What is a plaque in relation to growth media?
clear area in the lawn
What is the doubling time in relation to growth media?
amount of time required for a population of bacteria to double its number
What is an auxotroph?
bacterium which cannot survive on minimal medium because it cant synthesize a molecule it needs to live
What are obligate aerobes?
bacteria that require oxygen
What are anaerobes?
bacteria which do not require oxygen
